Introduction - About youth arts @ YASY

In 1987, Youth Association South Yorkshire initiated an arts development project for young people in youth clubs across Sheffield. Arts sessions, projects and training are now an integral part of YASY's work with young people and youth workers.

Youth arts at YASY aims to develop self expression and awareness, stimulate interest in arts media, build confidence and increase skills and communication. Creating opportunities for active participation and personal development is vital. YASY aims to provide hands-on opportunities, which not only engage young people in a creative process, but also enable them to produce a finished product.

Arts and crafts media are used in a youth work setting, so that sessions and projects take place where young people meet. This is done by negotiating with youth workers and young people. By placing arts workers and artists in youth clubs/centres. By providing training, ideas, support and arts equipment for loan. By exploring issues through arts media and enabling young people to participate in creative opportunities.

but at YASY I like it!'

Cultural Visits

Interaction with arts in the region is increased through cultural visits, including the James Turrell installations at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the National Museum of Film, Photography and Television in Bradford, and most recently, a visit to the newly refurbished Weston park Museum in Sheffield. By participating in these visits young people gain a first hand insight into historical and contemporary art.

Youth Arts Exhibitions
YASY's 'Long Gallery' celebrates youth arts by producing yearly exhibitions of project photos and original artwork by young people.
